Widow by samliu Widow by samliu
Natasha Romanoff/Natalia Romanova aka Black Widow. I thought it would be a good idea to spend a little more time and do some forced perspective with a background. It turned out not to be such a good idea considering how much time I spent nitpicking "is the hand was too small or the foot?", "are the windows too big?", "why isn't the gesture swooping as much as I want?", "ugh, I can't figure that shape out at this angle!" type of neuroses...

Even though she's falling off a building, she still takes a second to give a sexy pose for the camera. You got to admire the confidence in the girl.

Wide angle compositions are a beast to work on because everything warps around the edges. I still can't wrap my head around them.

Part of me wishes I was able to do comics fast enough back then to actually have give it a good run, but the other part cringes when I hear that name haha. I see Steve Platt every now and then and the topic of "do you ever miss comics" does comes up. Then the topic of relevancy as an artist in the public eye comes up next :p I do miss it sometimes but realistically, it's probably never going to happen. I am thankful of the few people that do remember those time tho! Thanks Buddy!

Never ever EVER ever?

I think the remedy might be a project you can take your time on. Something personal, maybe removed from the costumed heroics, a little more dramatic. Like an action movie on paper or a feature film in your head adapted to comics. Something you do in your spare time and by your own rules. You know what I mean?

In any case I like seeing your name in the credits because . . . I knew you when. Same with Jeff Matsuda and a few others. As I understand you trade the faux spotlight of comics super-stardom for an array of better conditions in the animation industry. So do you brother Liu, but . . . YOU GOTTA POST MORE! L O L !

Honestly I was too slow to make it in comics. Matsuda would always clown me about how he got paid for eight books in the time I did one. I got into animation thinking I wouldn't stay in it long and on the advice of an art director friend at Rhythm and Hues, went in solely to work on my speed. I ended up really loving storytelling and even with the pin-up, covers I would do on the side, I found that I lost interest in comics. It's funny what you find out about yourself along the way as you go through life. I still love and respect the medium but right now it's not for me. Maybe someday haha!

Thanks for bringing up the old days, it's always fun to reminisce!

That's funny what you said about Matsuda! L O L! In your defense though, your pages were like a Where's Waldo page of detail.

that is the tightness sam, you could get one of the background guys to color up your cityscape and you could drop the red onto her hair and you'd have a sweet little finished print. i really like the anatomy here, you tackle a lot of the construction issues in a very similar fashion to how i try and draw stuff. economy of line. keeping it simple. love the heels on her boot/costume, sexy but functional.
